(Written by 5th Class Busses School, Gentofte, near Copenhagen, Denmark
Next day the Vikings said goodbye to Roskilde. The wind was good, the sail was up and they were in a fine mood. After few hours the wind stopped and then they became sad. The men took the oars and rowed.
After some days they
saw some shadows in the horizon as they came closer and closer, they saw that it
was some blackfish. With big difficulty they
caught a blackfish.
There was whale meat for many days.
It was not their favourite food, but they had to eat it, because
their food store was running out.
When they were eating the meat of the whale, they discovered a ship. They thought that it could be some Irish people, but when they came closer, they saw that it was a whole fleet. The fleet was attacking the Danish Vikings. The Danish Vikings fought the attack back, but it didn't work, because the fleet had more people.
The Danish people, who
had arrived with three ships, left with only one. The fleet had taken one and the
other was sunk. Now the Danish Vikings again
went to Ireland. Even though they only had one ship they still wanted to complete the
journey.
The Vikings knew that the Irish monks had monasteries with plenty of gold and silver
things. The monks were rich and peaceful people, who were easy to plunder. At the same
time they could take some young men and women as slaves. All the Vikings hoped to return
to their wives as rich men. Especially Egild Halfredson was looking forward to returning
and asking the pretty woman, Tyra Torasdatter to be his wife.
Suddenly the men wake up of their dreams. The
look-out man cried, that he could see birds. The men knew that it was the first sign of
land. They all were staring over the ocean and slowly they could see land in the horizon.
