The End of the Road

(29th September 2000)

So the time is fast approaching
When I wave a fond goodbye
To colleagues past and present
With a tear drop in my eye.
But the current situation
Has a very welcome end
Because forty years of sandwiches
Are coming to an end!

I've had all sorts of combinations
From the tasty to the tat
I've had cheese and chutney butties
And some like Kite Kat!
I've had ham and egg and lettuce
Chicken, cheese and salmon (tinned)
O thank God that all the sandwich years
Are coming to an end.

It's no matter how you make them
Crusty bread or nice fresh rolls
By the time the lunch bell rings out
They all leave you flat and cold.
For tomatoes grow all mushy
And the ham has lost its zing
While the tasty mix of salmon
Should have never left the tin.

So farewell to cheese and chutney
Likewise to ham and egg
And goodbye to beef and chicken
(Unless it's on two legs!)
