| This project is the work of Traveller children who attend Our Lady of Lourdes National School in Bunclody, County Wexford. The school has 45 Traveller children. This work tries to recognise Traveller culture and respect and affirm it.The project tries to record Traveller lifestyle and the attitudes of Traveller children at a time of great change. Many families have settled in houses recently. Children attend school regularly and have become more integrated within our community. Traveller children now watch television, support English soccer teams, rent videos and listen to the same music as the rest of the children in Ireland. Will this change mean the dilution of Traveller identity and traditions? Already much of the Gammon spoken by Travellers is slowly being forgotten. Perhaps this project in some small way will record for posterity the culture of Travellers at the beginning of this millennium. We hope it will be a resource for other school with Traveller children. We are glad to accept submissions from Traveller children in other schools in Ireland. Please contact us by clicking here. |
