As part of Science Week pupils were asked to design a Rubber Band Powered Car from whatever materials they wished.
Competition Design Brief: Design and make a car powered only by rubber bands that travels the furthest distance (Car must have at least 3 wheels).
The Materials: The only materials you must use are standard rubber bands (no more than 10), you may use any other materials except glass
The results of the competition were as follows:

1st Place: Caroline Micner Swiac. Weight of car: 147g. Number of rubber bands used: 2 Estimate of how far the car will travel in the race: 850cm. Actual Distance covered in race: 8.95m and 11.3m

2nd Place: Lauren Jordan . Weight of car: 200g. Number of rubber bands used: 5 Estimate of how far the car will travel in the race: 6.5m. Actual Distance covered in race: 5.23m and 6.76m

3rd Place: Robert & Chafia Flynn. Weight of car: 200g. Number of rubber bands used: 10 Estimate of how far the car will travel in the race: 21000000cm! Actual Distance covered in race: 6.44m

4th Place: Leanne Mahon Weight of car: 65g. Number of rubber bands used: 6 Estimate of how far the car will travel in the race: 300cm Actual Distance covered in race: 4.8m and 5.27m

5th Place: Mairead Mahon. Weight of car: 73g. Number of rubber bands used: 6 Estimate of how far the car will travel in the race: 300cm Actual Distance covered in race: 4.7m and 4.85m

6th Place: Clodagh Byrne. Weight of car: 90g. Number of rubber bands used: 1. Estimate of how far the car will travel in the race: 400cm Actual Distance covered in race: 3.72m

7th Place: Paddy Scott. Weight of car: 300g. Number of rubber bands used: 1 Estimate of how far the car will travel in the race: 565cm Actual Distance covered in race: 3.0m and 2.0m

8th Place: Rory Byrne. Weight of car: 70g. Number of rubber bands used: 3 Estimate of how far the car will travel in the race: 400cm Actual Distance covered in race: 2.0m and 1.9m

9th Place: Neall Brennan. Weight of car: 200g. Number of rubber bands used: 4 Estimate of how far the car will travel in the race: 18cm Actual Distance covered in race: 1.6m and 1.0m
